Have you ever heard someone describe you or someone else as an old soul? I've always wondered what being an old soul entails-- maturity beyond your years? A refined taste for someone who's considered young?
Having an old soul generally relates to the idea of reincarnation. It implies that your soul has traveled from another era and has brought certain traits and lived experiences from that generation to your current location.
At the root of this concept, is there not some yearning for a better time? A Golden age? (Sorry, its the English major in me coming out) The Golden Age refers to a time in history that is highly revered and viewed as the most prosperous and flourishing period to live in. Every other era since the Golden Age is therefore, inadequate. The funny thing is that everyone will always be unhappy and never view their own generation as golden.
Think about it -- 'they don't make music like that anymore,' or 'the way of life in the -ies was so much better/ safer' or 'I wish I grew up in the -ies.'
Anyways, back to Emma Stone, in her interview with Teen Vogue, she slams the image she's been given of harbouring an old soul.
"I mean, what is an old soul? Let's just tell the world that this is BS, and I'm not an old soul. I am a screaming, new-born, just-slapped baby," said Emma.
I think she sees the ambiguity in this statement too! In this interview, Emma appears both ambitious and comedic -- there is nothing old about her!
"I have dreams of being a producer, being behind a camera, eating seven tacos for every meal, and making movies that affect people the way the affect me."
She covers the magazine in an orange coat, a fine compliment to her fair skin, freckled cheeks, and red hair. When asked about her fashion sense, she lists Lanvin, Chanel, and Louis Vuitton as her favourite designers.
"At first I didn't think I was allowed to have opinions without being a crazy person or completely irrational -- it's like in life, you learn where you can have them. But my stylist understands me completely. She's not like 'You're going to wear this sparkly princess gown'"
We're glad she's not putting you in any princess gowns either!
