Jay-Z Attends Nets Ceremony For New Stadium: The Nets Are In Brooklyn Baby!

Several heavy-hitters including rap star Jay-Z, who is part owner of the team, was at the ceremonial groundbreaking of the new home of the NJ Nets.

The Nets are coming to Brooklyn! The event is at the future home of the Barclays Center at Atlantic Yards in Brooklyn.

Construction of the sports and entertainment arena is loaded with controversy. Residents in the area who have been opposed to the plan since it was announced several years ago say that affordable housing should be in the construction plans.

Real estate developer Bruce Ratner has proposed building office towers and apartments.

Members of 'Develop Don't Destroy Brooklyn' have scheduled a mock burial at the groundbreaking ceremony using three-foot-tall bobbleheads depicting state and city officials.

A Brooklyn State Supreme Court judge rejected a challenge by homeowners and businesses to the state's use of eminent domain for the $4.9 billion, 22-acre project.

The arena is slated for completion in 2012.

MTV's Jersey Shore's "Snookie" Got Punched By A Dude! Now He Pays The Price!

Ok let's talk about one of my fav new reality shows, Jersey Shore! The Queens gym teacher charged with sucker-punching "Jersey Shore" cast member Nicole (Snooki) Polizzi is getting the boot.

Wow...right! Well, Brad Ferro, 23, a teacher at North Queens Community High School in Flushing, was caught by MTV cameras slugging Snooks in the face inside a Seaside Heights bar on Aug. 19.

Brad from Long Island was charged with simple assault, prompting education officials to reassign him to a "rubber room" last month.

A Department of Education spokeswoman said Tuesday that Ferro's firing is ready to take place.

"The department is in the process of taking termination action," the spokeswoman said.

MTV showed clips of the shocking punch in promos for the show, but it ultimately pulled the footage from the episode, calling it "extremely disturbing."

Ferro's dad told the Daily News last month his son was provoked.

"A woman who works for them instigated my son into doing something very stupid," Dan Ferro said. "When you get a bunch of people in a situation with alcohol and instigate, someone's going to do something stupid, and that's obviously what MTV wants."

HERE'S THE PUNCH IN CASE U MISSED IT:

Marijuana Is Legal In New Jersey?

The New Jersey Legislature on Monday approved a plan that would make the state the 14th in the nation, but one of the few on the East Coast, to legalize the use of marijuana to help patients with chronic illnesses.

The General Assembly and state Senate, on the final day of the legislative session, approved a plan to allow patients diagnosed with severe illnesses — including cancer, AIDS, Lou Gehrig's disease, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosis — access to marijuana distributed through state-monitored dispensaries.

Gov. Jon Corzine has said he would sign it into law before leaving office next Tuesday. Supporters said that within nine months, patients with a prescription from their doctors should be able to obtain marijuana at one of six locations around the state.

Approval of the law, after years of lobbying by patient-rights groups and advocates of less restrictive drug laws, was nearly derailed at the eleventh hour as some Democratic lawmakers wavered and Gov.-elect Chris Christie, a Republican, went to the State House and expressed reservations.

However, it passed by comfortable margins in both houses: 48-14 in the General Assembly and 25-13 in the state Senate.

Those who do not like the fact of legalizing Marijuana in NJ often pointed to California as a caution, saying that medical marijuana is so loosely regulated there that its use has essentially been decriminalized. Under California law, residents can obtain legal marijuana for a list of illnesses as common, and as vaguely defined, as anxiety or chronic pain!

But as for Jersey, they will be sticking to cancer, AIDS, Lou Gehrig's disease, muscular dystrophy and multiple sclerosisas as the requirements to gain some medical marijuana.
