NBC has signed two new cast members for the 13th season of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. Danny Pino (Cold Case) and Kelli Giddish (Chase) will join Mariska Hargitay, Ice-T and Richard Belzer as detectives in the Special Victims Unit in the New York police department.
The decision to find new cast members was triggered when Christopher Meloni announced he would not be returning to the show.
I have to admit, NBC did a good job filling Meloni's place. For those of you who haven't seen Cold Case, Pino starred in a similar role as Meloni in SVU. Detective Elliot Stabler (Meloni) is a morally sound cop who is rough around the edges when it comes to handling perps. Pino's former character, Detective Scotty Valans, was basically the same -- a solid cop who played by the rules but wouldn't hesitate to take one of the bad guy out back and straighten him out every once in a while.
Do I think Christopher Meloni is replaceable? Not at all, but prior ro Pino being cast I was afraid the show's 13th season would be a bust and lead to the end of SVU. Now, I'm not so sure and that makes me happy.
