'The Game' Producers Sign New Deal with BET

BET Signs 'The Game' Producers To Development Deal
Akil Productions to develop new shows for network

By R. Thomas Umstead, Multichannel News -- Broadcasting & Cable, 5/12/2011
BET has reached a multi-year development agreement with The Game producers Salim and Mara Brock Akil (pictured left), the network announced Thursday.

The deal with Akil Productions calls for the husband and wife team to continue their current roles as executive producers for BET's hit comedy series, as well as to develop and unspecified number of new shows for BET Networks.

The Game is the most watched series in BET's history, averaging 4.6 million viewers during its freshman run on the network earlier this year.

Along with The Game, Salim Akil directed the current theatrical hit Jumping The Broom. In 2000, Mara Brock Akil created and executive produced the former CW broadcast network hit series, Girlfriends, which currently airs in repeats on BET.

"We're thrilled to build on the very important relationship between our network and the Hollywood creative community, especially with two proven powerhouses in entertainment - Salim and Mara Brock Akil," said Loretha Jones, President of Original Programming at BET Networks in a statement. "Through this partnership we hope to continue to bring our audience high quality content that reflects their lives and our communities."

BET Announces MORE New Shows

BET puts more original players on 'Game' field
By Gary Levin, USA TODAY
April 12, 2011

BET is playing The Game, riding the success of its football-themed comedy into a new wave of scripted programming.

The top network for African Americans announces plans today for Reed Between the Lines, a family comedy starring Malcolm-Jamal Warner (The Cosby Show) and Tracee Ross Ellis (Girlfriends), due in October. They'll play professional parents (she's a psychologist, he's an English professor) of three kids. Two more new comedies are on tap for next summer, and BET is exploring its first foray into drama, developing a movie for 2012.

From left to right: Malcolm Jamal Warner and Tracee Ross Ellis
The stunning success of The Game has been a driving force. In January, two years after CW canceled the comedy about football players and the women in their lives, BET — which had been airing syndicated reruns of the series — launched new episodes.

The fourth-season premiere drew 7.7 million viewers, cable's biggest comedy opener ever, more than doubling the show's previous peak. All told, the winter season averaged 5.3 million; companion series Let's Stay Together claimed 2.9 million; and BET's prime-time audience jumped 24% to 950,000 viewers, its most-watched quarter ever. Both shows have been renewed for 22-episode seasons and return in January.

BET's CEO, Debra Lee, calls the results an "empowering and satisfying" payoff for its entry into scripted programming, years after the network took heat for a steady diet of suggestive hip-hop videos. (Somebodies, a 2008 comedy, fizzled.) "Our community is still starved for good original programming," Lee says. "The networks haven't had much to offer the last few years, and people are hungry."

Fox, WB and UPN, partly built on programming aimed at black audiences, have dropped it or no longer exist, and CW stopped airing comedies in 2009.

So the success reminded Hollywood and Madison Avenue about the value of African-American viewers, who watch more TV than any other group. The audience "is extremely loyal," says original-programming chief Loretha Jones, "and if you deliver a quality show to them week to week, they'll show up."

Game creator Mara Brock Akil says the new home is a better fit with more marketing support. At CW, "our numbers were competing with Gossip Girl, which got all the money and attention." And unlike Tyler Perry's broad family sitcoms on TBS, the show's adult appeal "allows us to deal with characters who are more complicated and flawed," she says.

Gucci Mane & Waka Flocka - New Reality Show?

2011 has been an interesting start for these two, but the word on the street is they are documenting it all for us to see! Sources say, Gucci Mane and Waka Flocka Flame are taping a pilot for their own reality tv show. (Isn't everyone?)

THE IS A RUMOR right now but sources say the yet to be titled program will give viewers an intimate look at the behind-the-scene lives of two of rap's biggest names.
"We show everyday life. What we get into in studio and at our shows. We just ordinary people with a crazy Rock 'N' Roll lifestyle,"
said Gucci.

"Because of the music we make, people think that's what we do all the time -- but we got a real family life. We got heart. We do a lot of things for the community and we love each other,"
he continued.

Gucci says he hopes the show helps people getting a better understanding of him and his best friend.
"I think they'll get a laugh more than anything. I'm not serious all the time. People think we are thugs because of our music."

Rumor also says Waka Flocka's mother, Debra Antney, will also star in the show, that if picked up, will air on BET. Debra is the manager of both rappers and former manager of Nicki Minaj where the famous line came from
"Don't worry bout me and who I fire i get what I desire, It's my empire" - Moment for life

BET AWARDS 2010-Brief Thoughts-The Complete Series

Chris Brown's breakdown at the BET Awards
I did something fun on Facebook while fast forwarding...I mean watching the BET Awards last night. Here is the "Complete Series" of what I posted.
BET AWARDS 2010-1st Hour Brief Thoughts
11:22pm
  • Okay what the eff has Kanye got around his neck? Is that a cobra from G.I. Joe? His performance was really nothing, but the set design was nice.
  • Nice intro from Queen Latifah. Glad she got back on the mic as an emcee. That's where she started.
  • What the eff has Jada Pinkett Smith got on...HER HEAD.
  • USHER-Nice levatating cloud set design, but voice sounded weak. Low mic? I'm sure that's what it was.His performance aiiight.
  • TARAJI!!! Mike Epps is a damn fool. LOL
  • Never heard the song T.I. was singing, but didn't understand a word he said. Hisflowistoofast.
  • Nia Long & Larenz Tate! 'Love Jones' reunion! The BEST of the "black romance" movies.
  • Love, Love, LOVE Alicia Keys. She can never do wrong. She looked so hot, even with her baby bump, so classy. No tattoos all down her back and shoulders. Perfect way to end the first hour.

BET AWARDS 2010-2nd Hour Brief Thoughts
12:29am
  • Queen Latifah & T.I. woulda been cute if he didn't call her CHLOE, it was CLEO. Know your history T.I.
  • First performance of the 2nd hour-B.o.B, Keyshia Cole & Eminem was cool, but like everyone I was waiting for the first two to leave the stage.
  • What the EFF has Monica got on? And for that matter Denice Williams? She is WAY too old for that gittyup and it looks horrible.
  • Is that Puffy? Somebody went crazy with the smoke machine. Is Puffy doing the Morris Day & The Time dance? T.I.'s performance on this song was better than his own. Nikki Minaj you look crazy enough with the orange hair no need to make the crazy face.
  • Jermaine, Jermaine, Jermaine. Your hair has less varnish but still looks a mess. A long year coming, Chris Brown finally did do the damn thing. Awww Chris is crying. Choke it up boi. You did Michael proud.
  • Drake performance...whack. Jeezy where you get that white jacket homie, the estate of Michael Jackson?
  • Kinda whack way to end the second hour.
BET AWARDS 2010-3rd Hour & the END Brief Thoughts
1:00am
  • 3rd hour starts off with EL DEBARGE! DeBarge is my favorite group from the 80s!
  • El DeBarge you still the man, but why you look like you're from the cast of 'Grease'? You can't really hit the high notes most times, but I ain't mad at you.
  • Even though I'm fast forwarding through the commercials Keith Sweat reality show? ok NEXT.
  • Is that it for LENA HORNE? Did Alicia Keys leave? Beyonce couldn't make it? Mary J? BS!
  • Tyrese did an amicable tribute to Teddy Pendergrass
  • Thank goodness Queen Latifah has gotten out of the costumes and back in a gown. She looks very nice.
  • Haiti/Gospel tribute was nice.
  • Getting sleepy 12:15am. How long are these awards? I'm fastfowarding every chance I get.
  • Don't like John Legend AT ALL, but nice speech.
  • Nice song from Trey Songz and he didn't even sing about him inventing something that's been around since Adam & Eve. Nice little 'Purple Rain' interlude.
  • Who's that bald chick sitting with Prince? The mother of Kanye West's girlfriend?
  • El DeBarge 'Second Chance' was nice!
  • ABOUT TIME we are at the PRINCE tribute. That is so cute. Prince has a picture of El DeBarge on his shirt.
  • Janelle Monette? She must have known she was going to sing 'Let's Go Crazy' when she went to the beauty salon. Her performance was cute though. Espiranza Spaulding so nice! Alicia Keys singing 'Adore' can it get any better? Alicia ROCKED-THAT-SH*T...until Patti LaBelle came out. Best performances of the night HANDS DOWN!
  • Queen Latifah looks so nice in the white.
  • Luda 'My Chick Bad'...My performance whack, my performance no good, my performance makes you wish ya would...buy the studio version instead.
  • 'All I Do is Win' was a mess. The marching band sounded good, but you couldn't hear anyone else. Busta you have a gut, don't tuck in your shirt and don't wear the Captain Crunch jacket.
A whack way to end the show and a weak show overall. Good night.

Chris Brown Says Without Him The BET Awards Are "Wack"...

Chris Brown in Vibe has given an interview for the return of the magazine. In the issue, he calls the BET Awards "wack" and criticizes Oprah. They are strong words by the performer who has become known not for his music but for roughing up singer and ex-girlfriend Rihanna.

Now others are saying Chris Brown's remarks against the BET Awards may not have been such a smart move for an African American hip hop singer on the comeback trail.

Check out what one person said...
The BET Awards is the Black Entertainment Television network's celebration of African American achievements in entertainment. It is a significant annual award program for the African American community. In Vibe, Chris Brown has made the unfortunate move of expressing his feelings about BET, and because they are negative, his expressions could hurt him. Brown is a hip hop artist, and this particular genre of music has a large African American following. For a singer who is on the comeback trail after pleading guilty to felony assault charges against Rihanna, it would be wise for Chris not to ruffle any feathers. A person on the comeback trail needs to play it safe, particularly when it comes to his audience.
To make matters worse, Chris Brown's thoughts in Vibe come off as a prima donna, and prima donna status doesn't win many votes. Just ask Kanye West.

In the issue CB says, "They were so bent on not getting me there that they messed up their own show." Such a statement is an insult to the other performers who appeared on BET and not the kind of statement that takes you out of underdog status. The singer was removed from BET's lineup. Think this will help him get back on their lineup? Me either lol smh

Drake was also on the cover..

BET Hip Hop Award Winners & Recap [w/ VIDEOS]

Jay-Z won the BET Hip-Hop Awards' MVP of the Year trophy, beating Lil Wayne, Drake, T.I. and Kanye West. Hov also opened the show with a performance of "As Real as It Gets" with Young Jeezy. Taped earlier this month in Atlanta and aired Tuesday night (October 27), the ceremony showcased the hip-hop nation, from the New Boyz to OGs like Jigga.

And while Jay faced stiff competition, Ice Cube didn't have to go up against anybody to win. He was honored with the prestigious lifetime-achievement "I Am Hip-Hop" award.

Jeezy co-presented the award alongside Ice Cube's favorite rapper.

"Without Chuck D, we'd be on a real bad collision course," Cube proclaimed during his acceptance speech. He also stated that old time rappers should not give up on the game and keep pursuing their careers.

Other performers on the show included the Goodie Mob, Snoop Dogg and Gucci Mane, who got a chance to perform all his big hits of the last few months, including "Break Up" and "Wasted." Even the legendary Kid 'N Play snuck in a dance step. Some of the most talked-about performances of the night were the ones that didn't happen in-house. Several rap cyphers were taped, resulting in standout verses from KRS-One, Eminem, Nicki Minaj and Joe Budden.

(Cypher: Joe Budden, Nicki Minaj + More)

(Cypher: KRS, Wale + More)

Em's verse was a fence-clearing homerun as he brought his distinctive cadence and semi-automatic handgun flow.

(Cypher: Eminem, Mos Def + More)

"Wow! I need to hear the unedited version!" DJ Drama, who DJed the awards show, said of Em's bars. "The crowd in the house went crazy! They were so excited to even see Eminem in a cypher. He's one of the greatest spitters of all time."

Some other winners announced during the show were Drake for Rookie of the Year and DJ AM for DJ of the Year.

Q&A With BET's CEO Debra Lee

BET Networks chief on new program, the importance of Michael Jackson and branding BET in the age of Obama

By Claire Atkinson -- Broadcasting & Cable, 7/29/2009

Inside Viacom, BET Networks is something of a rising star. Fresh off a stellar second quarter, thanks to stratospheric ratings for its BET Awards show, the cable network is busy developing new original programming on its flagship while teeing up a second service and rolling out internationally. Debra L. Lee (pictured above), chairman and CEO of BET Networks, talks with B&C's Claire Atkinson about new original programming, the cultural importance of Michael Jackson, and branding BET in the age of Obama.

Ms. Lee, 54, is Chairman and CEO of BET Holdings, Inc. , a media and entertainment company and a division of Viacom, Inc. She joined BET in 1986 as Vice President and General Counsel. In 1992, she was elected Executive Vice President of Legal Affairs and named publisher of BET's magazine division, in addition to serving as General Counsel. She was placed in charge of strategic business development in 1995. Ms. Lee is a director of WGL Holdings, Inc., Marriott International, Inc. and Revlon, Inc.-Forbes.com

BET's ratings were up 34% in the second quarter of '09. To what do you attribute that rise?

We've made a lot of strategic moves that have contributed to our ratings growth. Loretha Jones joined us last year as the president of original programming, and Barbara Zaneri joined us as our head of programming, scheduling, strategy and acquisitions. Together they have made our programming and scheduling even smarter in a number of ways - from strengthening Tuesday nights, to moving our hit gospel competition series Sunday Best to Sundays, to using our returning franchises to help launch new shows, to programming our dayparts in better ways.

There is more flow to the schedule, and we have made great acquisitions, including The Game. We have also acquired movies including Training Day and The Matrix; we're doing movies three times a week now.

Our ratings growth is a result of our original programming, and we have even more series in the pipeline. We have a nightly talk show with Mo'Nique, starting in October, called The Mo'Nique Show. We also recently added The Wendy Williams Show to our nightly line-up--it airs earlier in the day on Fox. We also have another new show about singer Monica that follows her comeback in the music world. Her show will be called Monica.

We are also partnering with NASCAR on Changing Lanes, which chronicles the search for the sport's next generation of drivers. We're looking at the changing face of NASCAR. It is something we are excited about.

The BET Awards obviously did a lot better this year coming right after the death of Michael Jackson. Tell us about how that came together?

We had 10.65 million viewers tune in (live + same day), which makes the BET Awards the number one show on cable so far this year. The number of viewers who tuned in to see the awards is a testament to Michael Jackson's far-reaching and long-lasting influence and legacy. It was really the first time people could express themselves about Michael, so the emotion really came through.

It also gave us the chance to promote other shows like [reality series] Tiny and Toya. We premiered it after the BET Awards ended at 12:45 a.m., and it became the number one original series in our network history. Coca-Cola sponsored a red room, where we had actor Idris Elba deejaying. [Our advertisers] see the value in having great talent on site.

Generally our BET Awards rate highly. The sponsors and partners for this year's show included Pepsi, Procter & Gamble's Cover Girl and My Black Is Beautiful, Twitter, Kmart, Lincoln, Ford, KFC Pride 360, Yahoo! Music and Grey Goose Vodka. It was the No. 1 telecast in cable television history among African-Americans. Stephen Hill, [president of music programming and specials] oversees the show every year.

How did this year's show come together?

Michael Jackson's death really changed it. Stephen and the team had to change just about everything only two days before, because we, of course, wanted to have the performers do Michael Jackson tributes as best we could in a limited time frame. Michael really created the song book for a generation. There hasn't been another entertainer like him, and I don't think there ever will be another person who comes close to making the impact he had on pop music.

Concert promoter AEG Live is negotiating to sell footage of the last Michael Jackson performance. Is BET interested?

We'd be interested; it's a little expensive, though. You know, one of my favorite memories of Michael was when I had a reception for him at my home. About 250 people came and he was perfectly charming and chatted about the business. He stood on a receiving line and he took pictures with everyone there.

I'm glad I had the chance to meet him. His only request was for bowls of Skittles. I've never seen grown people push each other out of the way to meet someone like they did with Michael.

How has BET's mission evolved? How does President Obama being in the White House help you?

It just so happened that our new brand strategy started the year President Obama was elected to the White House. Our mission is to respect, reflect, elevate and inspire our audience.

President Obama has had such a great effect. Having a black family in the White House increases awareness of black culture, and the number of non-black viewers coming to our network has increased.

A few months ago, President Obama invited me to come in and meet with a group of 12 CEOs to talk about the stimulus package. He said BET should be there talking with the likes of Mattel and Xerox.

BET worked with Procter & Gamble on a short series called My Black is Beautiful. Are you doing any other sponsored programming?

We just premiered a new series called Rising Icons, in partnership with Grey Goose Entertainment, about up-and-coming artists in music like Keri Hilson and Chrisette Michelle. The series takes viewers on an up-close-and-personal journey behind the scenes with the artists, giving viewers a glimpse into their road to stardom and revealing what it takes to be successful in music and entertainment today. We are doing more on the integrated marketing side.

How are you working with Nielsen to make sure that the African American audience is adequately represented?

They have increased the size of the African-American sample to 1,200, which is up from 600. We continue to find ways to make it more realistic and more representative.

How are ad sales proceeding?

They're holding steady and improving. Earlier this year, it was a tough time for everyone, but the third- and fourth-quarter ratings were really positive. National TV sales have held up and ratings are moving in the right direction.

Tell us about what BET is doing in addition to the core channel, and what's happening internationally?

In the fourth quarter of this year, we'll be launching Centric, which is targeted at 25- to 54-year-olds - essentially today's trend-setting, sophisticated African-American and multicultural adults. We're busy with the look and feel right now.

We'll be bringing back the Soul Train Music Awards in November on Centric. The music is going to be more R&B, and we've got two new shows, one about young Black male models called Model City, and one called Keeping Up With the Joneses, which follows Houston high society.

Internationally, we're on Sky and Freesat in the UK in nearly 11 million homes. We launched in the UK in February 2008, and we launched in Africa at the end of last year.

What are BET's achievements beyond the screen?

Just last week, we hosted our annual Summer Camp for Girls, which helps young African-American girls from low- and middle-income families make healthy lifestyle choices. We host it in partnership with General Mills, and more than 100 young girls attended this year.

After Hurricane Katrina we did a talkathon and raised $14 million. In 2008, we also held of a number of grassroots events through our "Be Heard" campaign to encourage people to get involved in the presidential election and vote.

We're always very proud of our pro-social efforts, which include our Emmy Award-winning program about HIV/AIDS and sexual health awareness called Rap-It-Up.

BET Awards a Ratings Juggernaut Amidst Criticism

-from Black Talent News

The live premiere of the BET Awards '09 on Sunday, June 28, drew 10.65 Million Total Viewers - the #1 cable telecast year-to-date and BET's biggest audience ever (NMR, Live + Same Day, 6/28). Coupled with strong ratings has come strong criticism.

BET scrambled and hastily turned the annual awards show into a quasi-Michael Jackson tribute three days after the pop star's sudden death. The show was dedicated to Michael Jackson and featured several salutes to Jackson by host Jamie Foxx and Ne-Yo. The highlight perfomances included Maxwell, the trio Tyrese, Johnny Gill, Trey Songz, The Ojay's, and Jay-Z. Capping the show was an emotional appearance by Janet Jackson, who spoke on behalf of the family to thank fans for their love and support.

"The number of viewers who tuned in to see the BET Awards '09 is a testament to Michael Jackson's far-reaching and long-lasting influence and legacy," said Debra L. Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, BET Networks. "We're thankful to everyone who played a role in the show, both on stage and behind the camera, and it meant so much to all of us to be there for our audience at this emotional time. Above all, we extend our love and prayers to the Jackson family and are honored that Joe and Janet Jackson were in attendance."

The BET Awards '09 also stands as the #1 awards show on cable for the year to date among total viewers. In addition, the 106 & PARK pre-show drew 3.1 million total viewers, and the BET Awards '09 After-Party Fashioned by My Black Is Beautiful Post Show drew 5.2 million total viewers. The sneak peek of the new BET series TINY & TOYA drew an additional 3.8 million total viewers. All three shows set BET records, becoming the #1 pre-show, post-show and original series telecasts in BET history, respectively (NMR, Live, 6/28).

Notwithstanding the strong ratings, the BET Awards '09 has provoked harsh criticism and come under fire from bloggers, viewers and journalists who found many elements distasteful and offensive, including host Jamie Foxx's multiple performers (3!), and constant shameless promotion of his album and upcoming tour.

Many were outraged by Lil' Wayne and Drake's performance which has been called "inappropriate," and in bad taste and poor judgement. The two were joined on stage by Weezy's pre-teen daughter and other young girls during the performance of their hit song "Every Girl in the World" which is about wanting to f*ck every girl in the world.

Twitter and Facebook became the main source of people revealing their disappointment of the performance. From celebrities to high profile magazines, everyone had something to say about it.

“Lil' wayne + wanting to f*ck every girl + w/ young girls on stage = smh, pure mess. how did bet miss how inappropriate that was?! (TheSourceMag's Twitter)

these girls onstage look a littttttle tooooo young to be the subject of this song. could be the red tutu (AngelaYee's Twitter)

Okay I have a problem! Why are there 12 year olds on stage while Drake and Lil Wayne singing this song!! I as like is that a little GIRL????? and then I was like wait there are more lil kids! HUH?? (TiaMowry's Twitter)

Drake/Lil Wayne performance really pissed me off by bringing those young 10 year old girls singing I would F ever girl in the world. (IPRMKTG's Twitter)”

I was hoping the BET Awards '09 would be a serious and sincere tribute by the black community to Michael Jackson. I would have opted for a medley of Jackson songs featuring "classy" performers like Usher, Justin Timberlake, Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson. Even a quiet moment of reflection while a well-cut montage celebrated his accomplishments would have played better than what transpired Sunday night. But instead we got "Guns is Michael Jackson"? Hmmmm.

I've got to give BET props for their noble intentions, but overall the show didn't have the class or organization befitting the King of Pop.
