If the answer is no, I think you should be. If you’re not a fan (yet) The Voice is a singing competition show similar to American Idol (only better-I think.)A lot of people, who aren’t watching the show, are asking me what it’s all about, and how they don’t understand the concept. I don’t get it, they can’t see who’s on stage, but now they can? Here’s a breakdown:
Like other competition shows, the contestants auditioned in various countries in hopes of being selected by at least one of four judges. Here’s a twist: the judges, Christina Aguilera. Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green, and Adam Levine (Maroon 5), are also competing against each other.
Let me elaborate. The blind audition process is undoubtedly what sets this reality show apart from its competitors. All four judges have their backs to the stage during the initial performances. If they like what they hear, they must hit a button, indicating they have selected this performer for their team. Only then will the judge see what the performer looks like, ensuring that the voice is the only factor being considered.
If more than one judge pushes the button, the performer decides what celebrity he or she would like to work with. Since the judges are in competition against each other, they often throw each other under the bus.
From this point on, the judges clearly know what the competitors sound and look like, so their backs are no longer to the stage. It’s unnecessary since the talent has already been selected.
Each judge will have 8 team members going into the battle rounds. Again, let me clarify. During the battle rounds, the judges will select two of their team members to compete against each other on stage. The judges will also select what song they will sing. The idea is to eliminate 4 people and create a super team of 4 singers. Immediately after the two contestants have collaborated on a song, the judge will send one person home. It’s intense!
We are currently at the live performance stage. This is how the show is similar to American Idol but it still varies. You can vote on which person you want to be safe and the judges can also select one person they want safe, regardless of the votes.
So far, we’ve only seen two teams perform. Team Christina and Team Blake. I’ll wait til next weeks performances to select my favorites.
Expect lots of The Voice updates since I’ll be following this show regularly. Here's a look at last nights opening number, performed by the talented judges:
