Cory Monteith Opens Up to Parade Magazine

Cory Monteith has a lot going for him right now. He is currntly in Europe touring with Glee, he is in the upcoming movie Monte Carlo with Selena Gomez and Leighton Meester, and he is the drummer for the band Bonnie Dune. Life is good -- but it wasn`t always so.

The actor opened up to Parade magazine about substance abuse, dropping out of school, rehab, and eventually reaching rock bottom. He admits to drinking and smoking drugs as early as 13 years old which eventually progressed to harder drugs. He revealed that he would try “anything and everything, as much as possible. I had a serious problem.”

At 19, his mother staged an intervention and Cory went to rehab for the first time.“ I did the stint but then went back to doing exactly what I left off doing,” the actor told Parade magazine

Cory describes what he calls a crystalizing event in his life in the magazine and reveals how this moment is what finally got him clean.

“I stole a significant amount of money from a family member. I knew I was going to get caught, but I was so desperate I didn’t care. It was a cry for help. I was confronted and I said, ‘Yeah, it was me.’ It was the first honorable, truthful thing that had come out of my mouth in years”

After he admitted to stealing the money, his family gave him an ultimatum -- get help or the family member he stole from would call the police and press charges. Tough, but fair-- and it worked.

"I was done fighting myself. I finally said, 'I'm gonna start looking at my life and figure out why I'm doing this.'"
So why did Cory decide now was the time to come clean. Well, it is a smart move for him to do so and not have it leaked in the future. To deny this was a calculated move by him and his PR is naive. This way he can control how the story is told and exactly what was told.

But there is more to it. The actor reveals to the magazine how he has made significant changes in his life over the years. He has reconnected with his estranged father after 17 years and he also worked toward receiving a high school diploma.

"I don't want kids to think it's okay to drop out of school and get high, and they'll be famous actors, too. But for those people who might give up: Get real about what you want and go after it. If I can, anyone can."

The fact that there is a good moral behind the story is touching-- he wants to have people learn from his mistakes and for those who are already battling with addiction or any form of substance abuse to realize it is never too late.

And all around the world, more teenage girls, young women, and yes even cougars who watch Glee with their children, are falling in love with Cory Monteith.

Speaking of his love life, the actor also opened up to Parade about dating.

“I like the idea of dating, but I’m not dating anyone exclusively, particularly right now. It’s hard to be in a relationship unless you’re ready to go public with it. So it’s a lot easier for me to not be in a relationship. I really don’t want that part of my life to be tabloid fodder. Not my style. And then there’s the flying around everywhere, which makes it hard. I’m pretty focused on my career, and if it comes down to hanging out with somebody or learning my lines, it’s gonna be learning my lines...But I really like dating—it’s a lot of fun. Delicious food and a frank conversation, that’s my idea of a good time. I like to keep it real.”

I`ll admit, good food and an intimate conversation with Cory Monteith sounds like the perfect date.
