EW is reporting that NBC is reviving reality show Fear Factor. The reality series first aired in 2001 and ran for five seasons. For those unfamiliar with the series, it’s based on putting competitors in terrifying situations and having them confront common fears, like heights, drowning, insects, and trying new (disgusting) foods. The last man or woman standing wins a cash prize while hearing the infamous catch phrase “fear is not a factor for you.”
Fear Factor was NBC’s response to reality show Survivor. Although it did well in the first season, ratings consistently dropped and the series could not keep up with American Idol- the hit reality series that shared the same time slot. Viewers were no longer interested in the over the top stunts, and critics found the show tasteless and solely aiming to attract viewers through shock value.
Oh how the times have changed!
Flash forward to 2011 and we have numerous reality hits based solely on shocking the viewers. Most reality TV is based on tastelessness, that’s what sells! Suddenly, NBC sees the potential and wants to reboot Fear Factor.
There has been no confirmation about Joe Rogan returning as host but I have a feeling if he’s on board, NBC will be too. He’s only gained popularity since the show ended as a commentator for the UFC. He's also got this bad boy vibe that goes with the series theme- like he's the ultimate daredevil.
Will you tune in?
