New York becomes the sixth and largest state in the U.S.A. to legalize gay marriage! Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed the document shortly before midnight last night, Friday June 25th. Gay marriages can begin in New York as soon as July, so long as there is not any legal challenges -- but that is expected.
A similar bill was defeated in 2009 and other approaches in New Jersey were defeated in 2010 and also in Maryland and Rhode Island this year. The vote barely passed in New York with a slim difference of 33-29 in votes. New York is only the third state, following Vermont and New Hampshire, to legalize gay marriage without being forced to do so by a court.
